Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a disease that includes both deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and cadiopulmonary embolism. It is a common, lethal disorder that affects in-hospital patients as well as outpatients. It is a recurrent disease that is often missed, especially in asymptomatic patients, and may result in long-term complications including chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTPH) and the post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS). The course contents include prevalence and risk factors, pathophysiology and natural history of deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, signs and symptoms of diseases, disease diagnosis and management. The course will also detail the protocols of peripheral Venous Duplex sonography. Duplex sonography is used as the gold standard to evaluate the patency of most of the deep and superficial venous system. It is also used in the evaluation of superficial venous insufficiency. Currency: USDCourse objectives: Upon completion of this training, you should be able to: Describe the prevalence, mechanism of disease, and pathophysiology of venous thromboembolism. Discuss testing algorithms used in disease diagnosis. Discuss the anatomy and physiology of the upper and lower extremity venous systems during a routine exam. Explain technical requirements for venous duplex sonography testing. Explain normal and abnormal findings and correctly interpret acquired data using B-mode, color and spectral Doppler imaging. Describe vein mapping techniques to identify suitability for dialysis access and distal bypass graft placement Describe the use of anticoagulation in disease management.
