Course description: 

This elearning module will provide a review of the abdominal anatomy and associated vasculature. It will focus on the sonographic appearance and assessment of the aorta, celiac, mesenteric and renal arteries as well as some of the major veins of the abdomen. The learner will review transducer selection and scanning technique.

Course objectives: 

The Abdominal Anatomy section will:

  • Describe the major organs of the abdomen and their primary sources of arterial inflow
  • Discuss the major branches of the abdominal aorta
  • Discuss the major vessels of the mesenteric arterial system
  • Describe the renal vascular anatomy in relationship to the aorta and kidneys

The Abdominal Duplex Ultrasound section will:

  • Identify the appropriate transducers for abdominal vascular imaging
  • Discuss caveats to abdominal ultrasound imaging
  • Discuss proper scanning technique for abdominal vasculature including: aorta, celiac, hepatic, splenic, superior mesenteric, renal, inferior mesenteric and common iliac arteries
  • Describe the vascular resistance changes in the mesenteric arterial circulation
  • Describe the causes of acute and chronic mesenteric ischemia
